Another Instagram “star” just announced her engagement by getting a ring from a trained captive dolphin during one of those tricks. This kind of stuff really upsets me and angers me that people chose to be ignorant and continue supporting this cruel animal circus for the sake of “glamorous” on-line image or cool selfie! 😡😥😢 There is absolutely nothing cool or prestigious about Dolphin performances. In fact the very opposite. Let’s look at the facts shall we?
Dolphins in captivity:
1) Dolphin can not live without movement. In the wild, an ordinary dolphin swims an average of about 100 kilometers a day, not possible daily in the pool.
2) In the wild, dolphins live from 25 to 50 years. Killer whales males live 50-60 years, females 80-90 years More than half of the dolphins die during the first two years of being in captivity. The average life expectancy is 5 years.
3) Dolphins live as families. When caught for dolphinariums, some of the individuals die from psychological shock due to separation from the family. Those who remain alive remember their families for rest of their lives and yearn for their loved ones.
4) Dolphins move with the help of echolocation. In pools, the reverberation of their own sonars, reflected from the walls, drives some dolphins insane.
5) There are frequent cases of suicide among dolphins in captivity. They take every breath consciously and if life becomes unbearable, they simply chose to stop breathing.
6) In dolphinariums, dolphins are injected with tranquilizers and anti-depressants to prevent animal aggression due to stress.
7) In the pools, cleanliness is maintained using chlorine, copper sulfate and other caustic chemicals, because of this, many dolphins swim with their eyes closed and get chemical burns of the skin.
8) Hunger and isolation are common ways of training for dolphins in dolphinariums.
9) Dolphins do not know how to look miserable despite the torment they suffer in captivity. Do not be misled by looking at their “happy” smiles.
So next time you want to take your kid to see “playful” dolphins jumping through hoops, remember the truth behind those “joyful” circus tricks and go somewhere else that doesn’t involve cruelty! 😔🙏
